The epithelium makes a transition from urothelium to nonkeratinized, stratified squamous epithelium when it reaches the external orifice. The epithelium in this specimen (HA17) is intermediate within that transition: stratified columnar epithelium. The lumen at the left is part of the venous plexus (vp).
